Summertime memories

While out on an early morning walk yesterday with Sadie, I realized that it must certainly be summer. Everyone I came across was in shorts, t-shirts and flip flops. The sun was out, the sky blue and it was scrumptiously warm.

Wouldn’t you just like to be a kid again and enjoy summer the way we used to? We could…

Go to the BEACH!
This is San Souci beach in Waikiki were I learned to swim!

Another favorite spot was Hanauma Bay both a nature preserve and marine life conservation district. It was also a favorite place to camp and I vividly remember an overnight trip with the Campfire Girls. We did a treasure hunt had a marshmallow roast and told ghost stories!

Is there anything more delicious that fresh fruit to munch on in the summer?

Or how about an awesome picnic in the park?

Ok, this was always fun, camping out in the backyard. These days it pays to do a staycation.

How about a BBQ with family and friends? I can't tell you how often we did this in the summer!

I saw numerous Disney movies at the drive in. We would all pile into the station wagon in our jammies, snacks in hand, for a fun family night out.

Remember these ads for the concession stand?

One of my absolute favorite things to do was to lay down in the backyard and look at the sky and try to see if I could see images in the clouds. Did I just see a dragon pass by?

How about finding a snug little corner in your world for a little summertime reading? I loved Nancy Drew books.

You know by the time the 4th of July rolls around there will be fireworks galore to enjoy!

Now, this is something I would absolutely love to do...go RVing! It looks like so much fun and I would love to up and down the West Coast and also discover all the state parks like Yosemite or the Grand Canyon. Maybe in a tricked out behemoth like this one...

...or a cute little Airstream like this one!

So what are your favorite summer memories and what are your plans for the summer? Enquiring minds and all that! Have a great summer!

  1. Favorite memories? Spending the summer on my grandparents dairy farm. Curled up on the sleeping porch with a good book. The sound of wooden screen doors slamming. Staying outside all day long, coming in only long enough to eat. Catching fireflies. Hiding from the boy cousins in the hayloft. And yes, watermelon! We just had our first yesterday and it was delicious! Hope you are having a wonderful first day of summer! Kat

  2. What a gorgeous post! My favourite memories are renting a thatched cottage in a little Devon village, exploring the rock pools with my brother oh, and eating steaming hot chips with lashings of salt and vinegar out of newspaper fending off hungry seagulls!

  4. Haven't thought about this for a long time....but now that you mention it, I remember playing kick the can and hide and seek in the twilight... baseball in a pasture with neighborhood kids during the day... lots of reading in the hot afternoons. A week of summer camp was always a highlight for me.

Today? Planning fun stuff to do as each set of grandkids come to visit. I' LOVE to have an old Airstream to renovate and/or a lakefront cottage. Either wuld be a dream come true.

Thanks for triggering the summer dreams!

  5. Hi Bonnie. Your childhood memories are wonderful! How fabulous to have grown up in Hawaii:) Summer, is there such a thing? We are right in Winter here and today is grey, raining and cold. Summer as a child for me always means 6 weeks of school holidays and of course...Christmas! Enjoy your lovely warm days Bonnie :) Hugs to you ~ Tina xx

  6. OH! So much fun...ditto on everything, but I really miss the ice cream man tooling down the street. Hearing his music and running to catch him.

We are going on a road trip to Colorado and Wyoming so my daughter Raquel can tour colleges...but I don't wanna talk about it.

Have a great weekend Bonnie down there in SD ~

  7. Bonnie-It seems summer evokes strong memories for all of us! I'm afraid I did not learn to swim at Waikiki--more the Y MCA :) I did however read every Nancy Drew book!

  8. I feel as if I've been on vacation! We got to know Oahu when our son was stationed there with the army a few years ago. Lucky boy got to spend his entire military career (four years) as an information specialist on that island. We loved to visit! Wish I had a place to let Oliver swim. Dalmatians are not known as water dogs but our first dal, Cooper, loved to swim! I too loved Nancy Drew.

I've recently read three good books that you might like. Sarah's Key by Tatiana Rasney, The Help by Kathryn Stockett and The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. The last one was recommended by my niece who is a surgeon. I was afraid it would be clinical and dry. It wasn't and was a real eye opener. My Muse bookgroup will be discussing that one next week.

Oops, I've written more than I intended but it was nice "visiting" with you.

    Best,
    Bonnie

What a fun post. It brought back many memories.
Loved Nancy drew but also Trixie Belden. I think that was the name. Did you ever read any of those?
Thank you for sharing your story with me. I am so happy right now that this bout turned out to be not the real deal. I want you to know that I will keep you in my prayers. It sounds like you have been through a lot my friend. God Bless you and thank you for your prayers.

  10. Bonnie dearest, I am home from vacation in California and the only thing missing was meeting you. I saw Bunny, Debbie, my cousin, and Penny from Angelsdoor along with other friends and family. What a hoot and we had so many laughs. I hope we can meet one day on our travels back home. Have a great week dear friend! (we just got back Monday night)

  12. Hi Bonnie! I just got back from the beach in NC with some blogging buddies...hot and humid, but fun! My favorite thing about summer is gettng to go barefoot! Or at least only having to wear flip flops! I remember playing outside all day long as a child, sleeping with the windows open, seeing fireflies among the yucca blooms and sneaking a few lucious strawberries from my grandmother's garden...the real kind...not the giant genetically engineered kind! lol I hope you are having a wonderful 4th...hugs...Debbie
